L-3 Communications' IEC Awarded Contract with Boeing to Provide TruTrak Locators for CSEL Rescue Radios

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 24, 2002--L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced that its Interstate Electronics Corporation (IEC) division has been awarded a contract with The Boeing Company's Integrated Defense Systems, initially valued at approximately $4.4 million, to support the Combat Survivor Evader Locator (CSEL) program.

Under the terms of the contract, IEC will supply TruTrak(TM) Locator GPS receivers for use in the CSEL handheld radios. The TruTrak Locator is designed for the CSEL downed pilot rescue radio to operate as a reliable embedded Global Positioning System (GPS) module. The heart of the TruTrak Locator receiver is IEC's XFACTOR Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM), which is Joint Program Office (JPO) approved and is currently in production. Total production of CSEL radios is expected to reach 53,000 units over the next seven years.

The TruTrak Locator provides specialized power management modes to optimize battery life while providing a very accurate time source for radio Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) operation. The module also provides area navigation in addition to Position Velocity and Time (PVT).

The IEC TruTrak module incorporates the latest SAASM technology to provide enhanced GPS security. SAASM is a tamper-resistant, multi-chip module that, when incorporated into a GPS receiver, gives authorized users access to the Department of Defense GPS Precise Positioning Service signal, which is more robust than commercially available GPS signals. The IEC SAASM is fully qualified by the GPS Joint Program Office. The SAASM module is combined with the radio frequency (RF) down converter and I/O logic to form the complete GPS receiver.
