L-3 Communications, Interstate Electronics Corporation Delivers Over 1000 Video Display Terminals for
Stryker Brigade Combat Team
Combat reliability demonstrated as few units require service after two years of deployment
IEC has extended the functionality of the VDT by developing two product variations; one for Vetronics and Light Armored Vehicle requirements and one for space constrained applications
ANAHEIM, CA - October 21, 2004 Interstate Electronics Corporation (IEC), a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corporation (NYSE:LLL), announces they have delivered 1028 Video Display Terminals (VDTs), fulfilling the requirements for the 1st and 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (BCT) as contracted by General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS). IEC has also extended the functionality of the VDT by creating the Split Enhanced Video Display Terminal (VDT-S) for space constrained applications for within ground military vehicles and has created the Enhanced Video Display Terminal (VDT-E), developed with GDLS designed to meet the future Vetronics requirements of the Brigade Combat Team and international Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) requirements.
IEC delivered the first production Squad Leader’s VDT to General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) in January 2002, for the U.S. Army Stryker Interim Armored Vehicle. The first Stryker vehicle was delivered by GDLS to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, in Ft. Lewis, WA in May 2002.
IEC provides the Stryker vehicles Squad Leader’s VDT. The highly rugged display has been subjected to the harshest field conditions and demonstrated superior MTBFs and MTBR. The unit was originally qualified to operate from -40°C to 52°C, shock and random vibration per MIL-STD-810E for ground mobile environments, NBC resistance, and many other challenging requirements.
The display is used by the vehicle’s Squad Leader for battlefield awareness. The VDT displays video from daylight and night vision cameras enabling the Squad Leader to see what the driver and gunner see, hosts the integral training system, and integrates with the Force XXI Battle Command, Brigade-and-Below (FBCB2) computer.
IEC has created two variations of the VDT. The Enhanced Video Display Terminal (VDT-E), developed with GDLS in Goleta, is designed to meet the future Vetronics requirements of the Brigade Combat Team and international Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) requirements. The enhancements included additional memory and storage, a Controller Area Network (CAN) interface, additional hard-wired bezel buttons for fire control and other user-defined applications. The Split Enhanced Video Display Terminal (VDT-S) repackaged the VDT-E for space constrained applications within ground military vehicles. The VDT-S separates the display and backlight from the computer and power supply and incorporates a higher resolution LCD and a faster computer. The VDT-S was designed to incorporate remote firing units, targeting computers, GPS tracking capability, and FBCB2. The VDT-S was selected and will be modified to integrate with a U.S. Army Air Defense System’s fire control system. The VDT-S was selected because it can consolidate multiple existing systems into a single platform.
