Rugged Vehicle Systems feature integrated functions on an open-architecture computer to simplify future upgrades
ANAHEIM, CA - September 1, 2005 Interstate Electronics Corporation (IEC), a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corporation (NYSE:LLL), announces initial shipment of ruggedized mobile network information (NI) systems for military ground vehicles in support of refurbishment contracts for current combat vehicles. The systems consist of high performance combat-proven displays and open-architecture computer systems. Under one of the contracts, IEC integrated the functions of five onboard computers into a single system. IEC initiated the development of the multiple-purpose computer/display systems in 2003 and completed in 2005; shipment will begin in 2006.
"The technologies required in today's combat vehicles to give war fighters a competitive edge can severely clutter the interior and ergo-dynamically interfere with the crew's ability to perform effectively," notes Robert Huffman, President of IEC. "Our integration of the various systems into a single system reduces space requirements and simplifies operational parameters."
The new mobile systems use an open rather than proprietary architecture, making them readily expandable and upgradeable in the future using "plug and play" SBCs or industry-standard peripheral cards. This is a cost-saving feature because it allows new technologies or functionalities, such as ad hoc secure network meshing from IEC, to be easily added in the future without redesigning the entire system. Identified by IEC as Mobile Network Information Systems, MNIS, the new system features IEC's combat-hardened displays, either remote or panel-PC type, and high-performance, ruggedized open-architecture single board computers. They can be configured with enhanced IR vision, targeting, battlefield management, vehicle diagnostics, SAASM GPS, 360(0) video and remote weapons station, all in a single system. The computer can also be equipped with multiple enhanced video channels. The new multifunction systems save space weight and use up to fifty percent less power. The incorporation of multifunction displays can reduce the number of monitors required for visualization, saving additional internal space in the vehicle. User-friendly, easy-to-learn toggle functions allow the crew and driver to focus on a single screen without the distraction of changing position to view a second or third monitor.
The company is currently under contract to supply several versions of the new mobile network information systems, which are qualified to most MIL-STD requirements. IEC's implementation of fully integrated systems dates back to the first militarized displays it produced in the 1980's, which combined the display function with high-end graphics and IR touch panel capability.
