L-3 COMMUNICATIONS’ IEC ANNOUCES SAASM KIT FOR GPS SATELLITE CONSTELLATION SIMULATOR

-Kit is the First Commercially Available in the Industry-

NEW YORK, NY, July 23, 2002 – L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL), today announced that its Interstate Electronics Corporation (IEC) division has introduced a new Selective Availability Anti- Spoofing Module (SAASM) upgrade Kit for its Global Positioning System (GPS) Satellite Constellation Simulator (SCS) model 2450. The SAASM is used domestically by the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as internationally by NATO and the Japanese Defense Force.

The IEC SAASM upgrade Kit makes the IEC 2450 GPS satellite simulator capable of evaluating and testing the latest generation of SAASM GPS military receivers. The Kit allows the user, with the proper test vectors supplied by the US Government’s GPS Joint Program Office (JPO), to conduct tests to verify the new, classified features of SAASM-based receivers while maintaining functionality to test older receivers as well. The SAASM Kit consists of PCMCIA cards that install on each of the digital signal generator cards housed in the SCS 2450 and a software upgrade to the classified version of the SCS software. A user can install the Kit in less than one hour, and online technical support is readily available.

"This SAASM upgrade Kit is an important advance in that it allows the end-user to facilitate complete functional testing of secure SAASM GPS receivers," said Robert Huffman, president of IEC. "IEC is pleased to introduce a product that helps to upgrade and maintain such an advanced system as the 2450 GPS satellite simulator."

The SCS 2450 is the industry’s most advanced GPS constellation simulator, with sophisticated features including real control over space segments and atmospherics, realistic ground-based jamming and earth blanking, and Doppler-induced phase shifts. The SCS 2450 accepts vehicle motion and altitude information, eliminating time-consuming command latency calibration. Powered by user-defined, high fidelity error models and up to 24 independent channels of L1 and L2 signals, it can simulate high dynamic land, air, and space vehicle multipaths in endless configurations with up to fifty jamming scenarios. With a true six-degree-of-freedom motion generator, INU/INS inputs, and data latency of less than 5 milliseconds, it can easily simulate the most intricate high-speed test profiles with a minimum of user programming. Two 450 MHz CPUs with 48MB of RAM comprise the engine for the SCS 2450, and the system processors dynamically allocate up to 208MB of RAM between motion data storage and data logging.

The SAASM assembly is a Multi-Chip-Module (MCM) that contains the core logic devices for a P (Y) code GPS receiver. Developed under the auspices of the GPS JPO, this device self-destructs if tampered with, which provides the necessary security for the P(4) code-decoding algorithm it contains. The SAASM, along with RF downconverter and I/O logic, forms the complete GPS receiver.

Based in Anaheim, CA, Interstate Electronics Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3, has been a long-term supplier of critical test instrumentation and missile tracking systems for the U.S. Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) weapons systems, including the Trident submarine. The division is ranked as an industry leader in GPS receiver and translator-based products, which are currently in use on multiple aircraft, cruise missiles and precision guided weapons. IEC produces ruggedized displays for both military and industrial applications. IEC also provides secure communications on a quick reaction basis for deployed forces in Eastern Europe.
