L-3 Communications' IEC Awarded Contract for Ruggedized Displays Program as part of Trident Strategic Weapons System Integration and SSGN Conversion on Ohio Class Submarines

ANAHEIM, April 29, 2004 - Interstate Electronics Corporation (IEC), a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corporation (NYSE:LLL), announced it has been awarded a twelve month, multimillion dollar contract by General Dynamics AIS, at Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Under the terms of the contract, IEC will supply two-hundred and forty-four, 18.1 inch and 15.4 inch intelligent displays for use in the launch control system aboard the Ohio Class SSGN/SSBN submarines. The displays feature a high resolution (1280 x 1024) AMLCD screen with field replaceable backlights and a high resolution infrared (IR) Touch Screen. The design is the result of a joint IEC and General Dynamics collaboration to digitize and integrate the electronic controls as part of both the Navy's Strategic Weapons System Integration and the SSGN Conversion programs. Key to the competitive selection of the IEC displays was the capability to withstand the significantly high shock and vibration levels induced in a weapons environment. The 15.4 inch display has been designed to fit in several configurations inside the submarine, including panel mount, tube mount and bulkhead mount.

The displays were built to accommodate growth by allowing for future integration of a single board computer and components, similar to the IEC Army fielded 10.4 inch Video Display used in the Stryker program. IEC was the only company that was able to show the capability during the design phase to integrate a backlight that could be replaced and installed in the application in less than 10 minutes.

IEC has specialized in the development of a series of custom and COTS intelligent displays primarily for harsh environment applications. Unique MMI features include sunlight readability, "boot kick" shock resistant screens and low light output for night operations. The displays are operational worldwide on a number of military and commercial vehicles: the Harpoon missile launcher, Knight ground vehicle, the International Space Station, Air Force Recon aircraft, the Army's recently deployed Stryker Vehicle and other applications.

These units are qualified to MIL-STD-810F (shock) and 810E (vibration) and meet EMI MIL STD-461D. The IR Touch Screen has been developed to withstand sunlight interference and meets all of the qualifications of the display. The 15.4 inch is in a sealed box while the 18.1 inch is sealed to the front panel. Both units use conductive cooling eliminating the need for noisy and failure-prone fans.
