|
New York, NY, February 4, 2002 - L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced that its Interstate Electronics Corporation (IEC) division has been awarded a three-year contract, valued at approximately $6 million, to support the Ground-based Midcourse Defense Segment (GMDS) by the U.S. Army Strategic Missile Defense Command (SMDC). Under the terms of the contract, IEC will supply thirty Digital Global Positioning System (GPS) Translators (DGTs) and two GPS Translator Processors (GTPs), along with sustained engineering, logistics and field launch support. The contract includes options for two one-year extensions bringing the total potential value to approximately $9 million. This contract award represents an expansion of IEC’s role on the GMDS program following successful tests of the IEC manufactured Translated GPS Range System. IEC has been providing hardware and range support to the program since 1997. GMDS, formally known as National Missile Defense (NMD), is one of several Department of Defense Missile Defense programs being developed and managed by the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization and reporting directly to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. When completed, the GMDS will be composed of early warning sensors to detect missile attacks, sensors to track and identify the attacking missile warheads, command and control processors to develop and execute the defense engagement plans, and interceptor missiles to engage and destroy the threatening warheads. IEC GPS Translators are flown on both simulated warhead and booster stages of interceptor kill vehicles. Because of their unique function and advanced features, GPS Translators are the most accurate means of post mission flight measurement and range safety tracking, which is critical to the GMDS program. Based in Anaheim, CA, Interstate Electronics Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corporation, has been a long-term supplier of critical test instrumentation and missile tracking systems for the U.S. Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) weapons systems, including the Trident submarine. The Division is ranked as an industry leader in GPS receiver and translator-based products, which are currently in use on multiple aircraft, cruise missiles and precision guided weapons. IEC produces ruggedized displays for both military and industrial applications. IEC also provides secure communications on a quick reaction basis for deployed forces in Eastern Europe.
