General Atomics Selects L-3 Communications' IEC SAASM-based GPS Receiver for LYNXTM SAR/GMTI Radar System

ANAHEIM, CA - January 31, 2003 - L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced that General Atomics has selected Interstate Electronics Corporation (IEC), to support the GPS functions of their LYNX synthetic aperture radar (SAR) / ground moving target indicator (GMTI) radar system. Under the terms of the contract, IEC will supply TruTrakTM GPS receivers for use in their adverse-weather global surveillance system. The system aids in reconnaissance, surveillance, geo-location and targeting applications based on the military's need to be informed regardless of weather condition or time of day.

The IEC TruTrak receiver incorporates the latest SAASM technology, including extended functions, to provide enhanced GPS security. SAASM is a tamper-resistant, multi-chip module that, when incorporated into the GPS receiver, gives authorized users access to the Department of Defense GPS Precise Positioning Service Signal which is more robust than commercially available GPS signals. The SAASM module is combined with the radio frequency (RF) down converter and I/O logic to form the complete GPS receiver.

LYNX is an all-weather sensor that can see through clouds, rain or fog, day or night, which can be mounted on a variety of military and commercial aircraft. In its synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mode it can produce a two dimensional representation of the spatially varying radar cross-section of a particular scene on the ground. In the ground moving target indicator (GMTI) mode the LYNX sensor can provide accurate tracks of moving targets on the ground.
